By the Shore

ekphrasis of By the Shore by Winslow Homer

--

Sally watched her cousin Gladys wring her soaked hair. She imagined
the water on Gladys’ legs, how cool it must feel. She wished she were as brave as her cousin, but she had to set an example to her younger sister. Proper ladies enjoyed the beach in light dresses and umbrellas. Tonight, she promised herself, in her darkest most secret dreams, she would disrobe completely, loosen her hair, and slip into the river’s coolness. She would lie back and let the current take her.
