On the Veranda

Ekphrasis of On the Veranda by John Singer Sergent

--

Vernon liked being surrounded by his women. He liked seeing their hands busy with delicate bits of fabric, the needles glinting in the sunlight. He liked hearing their voices rise and fall in gentle discourse. He liked being protected by the women. They fed him and soothed him, brought him iced drinks in the late summer afternoons, and saw to his soul on Sundays.
