Summer Storm
a poem about a summer storm
It will rain forever now. The great sheets whip
the ground like a last enraged party pounding
a fist with every word, the lightning crashing
through the sky like glass, bodies
of trees falling over in the yard. Always this
arguing, this constant conflict. If it’s this bad,
they should just divorce and be done with it.
No one would think twice about it these days.
Nothing changes the human condition.
When things get bad enough, the electricity gives up
and shuts down. Later I’ll have to reset everything.
When it’s finally over, the spitting crackling hissing
spent, the rain begins to move calmly, like two people
awakening, turning one to the other.
